8-12 Summer Session Programs

Dates:

Session 1: June 15th - July 2nd -Juniors and Seniors only

Session 2: July 6th  - July 23rd - open to all high school students

Summer School Programming - High School summer programming is designed to help students to recover courses that they have not passed in a smaller class size. Students are able to take up to 3 courses during each session of summer school. This provides the opportunity for the student to complete 3- .25 credit classes.

Experiential Education In addition to our traditional classroom experience, MPS also offers many experiential learning opportunities for students through our FlexCredit Academy. Experiential programs are open to students in grades 9-12 and will be available during the first session.

Students who attend a Non-Minneapolis Public High School but are Minneapolis residents can attend MPS Summer School.  Students will need to complete a Form 13 and a Continuous Learning Plan (CLP) in order to be eligible for our summer programs.

Students will need:

*Credit evaluation from their current school counselor.

*A signed copy of the CLP by the student, parent, and school staff is required prior to a student being registered for course(s).

You can email the credit evaluation, completed CLP, and site preference or questions to Aaron Gerhardt.

Our Programs:

FlexCredit Academy

FlexCredit Academy is a flexible learning program developed by the Minneapolis Public Schools staff to allow students to work in small groups with MPS teachers 1 to 2 days a week while working a job, participating in a StepUp internship, or spending time with their families. Students work with teachers in a blended learning model where they receive small group instruction, coupled with individualized coursework.

Wilderness Inquiry - Adventures in the City

Wilderness Inquiry and Minneapolis Public Schools are leaders in Minnesota in blending credit recovery and experiential education. Adventures in the City provide a unique experience throughout Minneapolis. Students will participate in a series of day trips throughout the city to learn about our history, nature and spaces while working with MPS teachers to recover specific core content courses.

MPS and Wilderness Inquiry are working to expand the offerings to include Biology, Physical Science, English 9-12, US History, US Government, Intermediate Algebra and Geometry.

Court Camp

In conjunction with the Federal Bar Association, students receive unprecedented access to the federal court system, meeting with judges, attorneys, probation officers and other employees of the courts. They attend numerous court proceedings including reentry court, a naturalization ceremony, and criminal sentencings. Every student gets a mentor from a local attorney to help them explore career options, and to answer any questions that they may have. The student's experience is culminated with a mock trial, where students are able to take the role of judge, prosecutor, defense, witness, jury, or defendant.

Walker Art Program

Students will go to the Walker Art Center and work with an MPS teacher and the walker staff to explore contemporary concepts in art and society. Students will have behind the scenes access to The Walker exploring the exhibits, learning about the exhibits, and explore their relationship to society through the art that they see and create.
