Summer Session Programs 2019-20

Rising Grades 1-5 Summer Session 2020 General Program Description

Summer Session 1-5 instruction is focused on accelerating student growth through culturally relevant, socially and emotionally supportive programming.

2020 MPS Summer Session Literacy:

  • Summer Session core curriculum includes Delta Science First Readers in rising grades 1-2 and Seeds of Science-Roots of Reading in rising grades 3-5. Both curriculums integrate the teaching of science and literacy.  Students learn science concepts and apply literacy learning strategies through hands on experiences.
  • Rising grades 1-2 units of study include Earth, Sky, Animals, Sorting, Matter, Plants, Motion, Weather, Using our Senses
  • Rising grades 3-5 units of study include Gravity and Magnetism (gr 2), Designing Mixtures/Substances (gr.3), Variation and Adaptation (gr. 4)
  • The literacy block incorporates a workshop model, where students participate in whole group, small group and independent reading and contextualized application of skills and strategies. Students will have access to online libraries and additional media resources.

2020 MPS Summer Session Math:

  • Instruction is focused on students engaging in Guided Math groups, with emphasis on standards-based, rigorous, engaging meaning making learning opportunities where the teacher focuses on a particular concept, strategy or skill. Teachers facilitate this learning through hands-on, scaffolded conversations and intensive questioning (Math Talks)

Guided math provides a structure for teachers to differentiate instruction so they can reach and teach every student by:

  • Providing immediate feedback so the student can adjust their work
  • Questioning students in small groups so they have an opportunity to talk with their peers, ask questions and justify their mathematical thinking
  • Providing short lessons that emphasize conceptual understanding, procedural fluency or problem solving
  • Scaffolding lessons so that they can be taught at a concrete level, pictorial level or abstract level
